St Mary's School

The children are at the heart of everything we do.

Last Friday, our year 5 and year 6 Eco Warriors were sent on a very exciting trip to the Recycling plant!

As Eco Warriors at St Mary’s RC school, our children have the responsibility of collecting recycling boxes from each class, and ensuring that they are ready for collection. We were very interested as to what happened next; where does our recycled material go after it is collected. Luckily, we were invited to find out!

We learnt many interesting facts. For example; all glass that is collected for recycling on the Isle of Man is the only material that stays on Island. They use it for road surfaces, that’s why sometimes you can see sparkly bits on the roads!

We also found out that all other recycled materials are shipped over to the UK. They stay in the UK and are reused. For example, all of the paper we recycle is made into newspaper rolls. This is a way of making sure that the Isle of Man are recycling ‘smart’.

In the pictures, you can see that we were given lots of materials to explore. We were shocked to find out that football shirts are made from a plastic fibre!

A big thank you to all that work at the Ballacottier Recycling plant; we had a really fun afternoon, and have reminded ourselves of our key part in recycling!
