St Mary's School

The children are at the heart of everything we do.

On Monday, the whole school took part in a special day focusing on the Rights of the Child. In Year 1, our focus was the right to be safe.

We began our day with a dialogue session with Nick, where we discussed what it means to feel safe and why it is important for everyone to have the right to be safe. The children shared some thoughtful ideas and talked about different ways we can help to keep ourselves and others safe at school, at home and when outside.

Throughout the day, we created our own posters about how to stay safe, including listening to trusted adults, using kind hands and making sensible choices. We also enjoyed playing a game of Red Light, Green Light, which helped us to identify same and unsafe behaviours.

To finish the day, the children designed and created their own Safety Shields, filled with pictures and ideas showing the ways they can protect themselves and others.
