St Mary's School

The children are at the heart of everything we do.

This week, Year 5 completed a STEAM project all about the digestive system! We learnt about each stage of the digestive system, and created an information booklet full of our knowledge.

On Tuesday, we worked in groups to recreate every stage of the digestive system!

Stage 1: We used our hands to break up crackers and banana, this represented our teeth chewing the food into smaller pieces.

Stage 2: We placed the food into a plastic bag of orange juice, this represents the food entering our stomach and stomach acid.

Stage 3: We mashed the food within the plastic bag. This represents our stomach breaking the food down.

Stage 4: We squeezed the liquid into a pair of tights. This represents the food entering our small intestine.

Stage 5: We squeezed the liquid through the tights. The liquid coming out represented the nutrients we absorb into our body.

Stage 6: We soaked up any remaining liquid using paper towels and placed the solid into a paper cup. This represents the large intestine absorbing water and forming faeces.
