St Mary's School

The children are at the heart of everything we do.

This term, our Discover Project has taken us back in time to 1666 as we explore The Great Fire of London. To bring our learning to life, the children have been completing exciting outdoor missions inspired by the landmarks, events and geography of London.

As part of our project, the children have worked together to build some of London’s most famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge and Big Ben. We even constructed our own boat, which will set sail down our “River Thames” and pass under Tower Bridge!

Alongside the historical learning, we are threading through the strands of Philosophical Teaching and Learning, with a particular focus on Dialogue. Throughout each mission, the children are encouraged to think aloud, ask questions, listen carefully to one another and build on each other’s ideas.

These outdoor missions not only bring history to life, but also empower children to become confident thinkers who can explain, explore and evaluate ideas together. The children have absolutely loved the hands-on challenges, and we can’t wait to continue our adventures as the term goes on.
