St Mary's School

The children are at the heart of everything we do.

This week, our learning has been all about feelings, inspired by The Colour Monster. The children have really enjoyed talking about emotions and how different colours can represent how we feel.

Calm Toolkits

We started by thinking about what helps us feel calm. Everyone created their own calm toolkit, filled with ideas and objects that help us relax—like soft toys, quiet spaces, and gentle music.

Sensory Trays & Colour Sorting

Our sensory trays were themed around different emotions. The children explored textures and colours, then used tweezers to sort items into jars based on how they thought each colour might feel—great for fine motor skills and emotional awareness.

Play Dough Colour Monsters
We made our own colour monsters out of play dough, choosing colours that matched how we were feeling. Each monster was unique and full of personality!

Colouring Our Feelings
The children coloured in their own Colour Monster pictures, using colours to show how they felt that day. It was a lovely way to express emotions through art.

Cotton Bud Phonics Painting
We practised our SATPIN sounds by painting them with cotton buds—fun, creative, and great for developing pencil control.

Numbers 4 and 5
In maths, we explored numbers 4 and 5 through counting, games, and hands-on activities. The children are becoming confident with recognising and using these numbers in different ways.
