Last week our Reception children enjoyed a wonderful range of activities inspired by the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The class were fully engaged and showed fantastic creativity, imagination, and problem‑solving throughout the week.
Maths – Short and Long
In maths, we explored the ideas of short and long. The children measured characters from the story and then made their own worms inspired by Superworm, comparing lengths and using great mathematical language.
Literacy – CVC Words
Our literacy challenge focused on CVC words. The children looked closely at items they might find in Little Red’s basket and used their phonics skills to sound out and write what they could see.
Construction – Forest & Cottage Building
In the construction area, the children worked together to build the forest and Grandma’s cottage. They thought about which materials would help create strong, stable structures.
Role Play – Retelling the Story
The role‑play area was full of excitement as children acted out the story, taking on the roles of Little Red, the Wolf, Grandma, and the Woodcutter. Their storytelling skills shone throughout the week.
Fine Motor – Bridge Building
For fine motor practice, the children designed and made bridges to help the forest animals cross safely. This activity encouraged careful building and perseverance.
Creative – Gifts for Grandma
The children also made special handmade gifts to take to Grandma, each one unique and carefully crafted.
Play Dough – Flowers for the Basket
In the play dough area, children created beautiful flowers to place in Little Red’s basket, exploring shapes, patterns, and colour.
