As part of our learning about the Great Fire of London, the children recently visited Douglas Fire Station to explore how firefighting has changed since 1666. The firefighters showed us around the station, demonstrating modern equipment such as the fire engine, protective clothing, hoses, and breathing apparatus. The children were especially excited to see how quickly everything can be used in an emergency.
During our lessons, we have been comparing this modern equipment with what was available during the Great Fire of London. The children learned that in 1666, people relied on leather buckets, simple water squirters, fire hooks, and teamwork alone to try to stop the fire spreading. Seeing today’s advanced tools helped the children understand how much safer and more effective firefighting has become.
Although our focus was on how equipment has developed over time, the visit also reminded us how local services support our community, helping to keep everyone safe. The children behaved wonderfully and impressed the firefighters with their thoughtful questions.
