Last week our focus book was The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and the children had a wonderful time exploring activities linked to the story.
In maths, the challenge was to count the different foods and decide whether to feed them to the odd caterpillar or the even caterpillar. The children worked brilliantly on their number skills! We also did a fantastic outdoor maths lesson, where we hunted around the playground and sorted the numicon into odd and even.
For our writing challenge, the class wrote simple sentences using picture prompts from the story. We were very proud of their growing confidence and creativity.
In the creative area, the children made symmetrical butterflies, carefully matching the colours and patterns on each side. Over in construction, they designed and built safe, warm and dry homes to keep a caterpillar protected.
Our play dough challenge helped the children practise subitising numbers to 10, while the role‑play area became a busy farmers’ market inspired by all the foods the caterpillar found. Finally, the tuff tray focused on scissor control, giving the children plenty of opportunities to strengthen their cutting skills.
It was a fantastic week of learning, exploring and storytelling!
